Join us on the weekend 20th and 21st June and see history come to life with the Taunton Garrison. The Monmouth Rebellion of 1685 was an attempt by the Duke of Monmouth, an illegitimate son of Charles II, to overthrow King James II and claim the English throne, drawing support from Protestant dissenters in the West Country. It was swiftly defeated after the Battle of Sedgemoor, leading to harsh reprisals known as the “Bloody Assizes,” which deeply affected communities across Somerset. In June 1685, rebel troops loyal to the Duke of Monmouth camped in the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. The Taunton Garrison recreate this historic event with an encampment and displays of rebels & soldiers from the period. The weekend will feature a display of a period cavalryman, performed by The Troop, with horses at the encampment, offering a vivid glimpse into 17th-century warfare. There will also be an accompanying talk at 1:00pm in the Abbot’s Kitchen: 1685: The Sufferings of the Glastonbury Rebels. Join historian and writer Stephen M.
