- **Event Description**: Glastonbury Abbey can claim many distinctions, but one perhaps less familiar to many is that it provides historians with one of the only documentary records of a monastery garden.

Generally, the place of a garden and the work of gardening in a medieval monastery remain in the shadows. There is scarcely any archival evidence and archaeological insights depend on the survival of substantial deposits of bio-waste. The gap has tended to be filled with beguiling images of well-tended flower and physic gardens like those forming the background of a Renaissance fresco. The reality may have been quite different.

In this talk, James Clark takes Glastonbury as a gateway into the lived experience of the monastery garden.

James Clark is Professor of History at the University of Exeter. His new book on monasteries in the landscape of medieval Europe, Monasterium, will be published by Allen Lane in 2026.
