Transforming Employability in Scotland: Health, Work and Economic Inactivity

Tuesday 28 October 1000-1230 (followed by buffet lunch)

Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, 99 George Street, Glasgow G1 1RD

Addressing health and disability-related economic inactivity is an important priority for No One Left Behind and is crucial to delivering opportunities for Fair Work for service users. There is growing consensus that we need to further develop employment services that address both the employability- and health-related barriers of economically inactive groups. It is also important that solutions are developed in collaboration with service users and employers, and rooted in building more inclusive workplaces. This interactive workshop - the third in a series co-produced by the Scottish Centre for Employment Research @ Strathclyde Business School and the Scottish Government - will help employability stakeholders to consider 'what works' in addressing health and disability-related economic inactivity and how we can do better.

Two mini-keynotes will share good practice to set the scene. Professor Adam Whitworth of the Scottish Centre for Employment Research @ Strathclyde Business School will draw on his extensive experience as an evaluator of, and adviser on, UK and Scottish Government-funded provision, especially sharing lessons from Supported Employment and IPS to consider how we can better engage employers and service users in workplace-based solutions.

Professor Ulrika Bejerholm of Lund University, Sweden is a world-leading expert on policy, practice, and innovation to support the inclusion of people managing health conditions. She will share insights from Sweden and other international examples of good practice, highlighting how co-production and also research can shape sustainable systems of support.

The Strathclyde team will then facilitate (and capture insights from) a series of short breakout activities to help participants reflect on what works and critical success factors in aligning health and employability provision to address economic inactivity.
