The embroidery is most commonly seen on the beautiful hand-embroidered dresses or ‘thobes’ that are an important feature of Palestinian culture and connection to the land.Rayya Ghul grew up in St Andrews where her refugee parents had made their home. Her father was from Palestine and her mother, from Silesia. Rita, Rayya's mother (herself an accomplished needlewoman), was enthralled by the thobes worn by the women in her husband’s family and began collecting them. Rayya will be bringing her collection of thobes and speaking about this tradition, what it means for her, and how these beautiful artifacts tell important stories. At the end of the Assembly, you can examine the thobes more closely and even try them on.Date: Sunday 28th September.Time: 10:45am for an 11am start.Location: Partickhill Bowling Club, 46 Partickhill Road, Glasgow, G11 5BY.
