Our first public lecture of the 2026–27 season will be given by Dr Veronika Dornan, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Edinburgh and Royal Observatory Edinburgh.

# Space Telescopes and Star Clusters #

Astronomers in Scotland and around the world use space telescopes every day to understand more about our galaxy and our place in the Universe. But how do we study how galaxies like the Milky Way form and evolve when we cannot sit and watch changes unfold over billions of years?

Star clusters, bright, massive and often extremely old groups of stars held together by gravity, can act as tracers of the changes their host galaxies have undergone.

In this lecture, Dr Dornan will explore how astronomers use space telescopes to study star clusters, and what these remarkable objects can tell us about the history and evolution of our galaxy and beyond.

Dr Veronika Dornan is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Edinburgh studying extragalactic star clusters with the Euclid space telescope. She completed her PhD at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 2025 and is also a writer for Astrobites, helping to make the latest astronomical research accessible to wider audiences.
