Stories rooted in India and Bangladesh brought to the screen by filmmakers who are now based in Scotland.These are stories of home, of people, places, relationships, and realities shaped within South Asia. From intimate, deeply personal narratives to visually striking cinematic explorations, the films offer a rare opportunity to experience contemporary South Asian storytelling with authenticity, nuance, and craft.What brings these works together is the perspective behind them: a group of filmmakers who carry their histories with them, and who are now part of Scotland’s evolving screen landscape.The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers, offering audiences a chance to engage directly with the voices behind the films.What to ExpectA curated programme of short films set in South AsiaStories from India and BangladeshDistinct cinematic voices from filmmakers now based in ScotlandA live Q&A with the filmmakersAn evening of thoughtful, engaging, and visually compelling cinemaFeatured FilmmakersMahde Hasan – BangladeshMahde Hasan is a Bangladeshi screenwriter and director whose debut feature Sand City premiered in the Proxima Competition at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2025, where it won the Proxima Grand Prix.His work has been widely recognised on the international festival circuit, with short films including I Am Time and Death of a Reader screening at the 69th and 71st Locarno Film Festivals. He also won the movieofmylife digital competition at the 70th Locarno Festival with Where is the Friend’s Home.In 2018, Mahde received the prestigious CNC development grant for Sand City, which went on to secure production support from Visions Sud Est and was presented at Cannes Film Festival’s La Fabrique. His short film A Boring Film was selected for Locarno’s Pardi di Domani section in 2020.Now based in Glasgow, Mahde is developing new work that explores the intersection of South Asian storytelling traditions and contemporary Scottish narratives, bringing a distinct cross-cultural perspective to his filmmaking.Gauri Sharma – IndiaGauri Sharma is a Glasgow-based documentary director and self-shooting filmmaker working across unscripted television and independent film.Her work spans major international platforms including National Geographic, BBC, Discovery Channel, Prime Video, and DW Documentary, contributing to a range of award-winning productions.A passionate storyteller, Gauri approaches filmmaking with the belief that stories can be a form of medicine—offering space for reflection, connection, and healing. Her work is grounded in authenticity and human experience, often exploring deeply personal and socially resonant themes.She holds a Master’s degree in Film Directing from the University of Edinburgh and is a Scottish Documentary Institute Bridging the Gap 2024 fellow.Riad – BangladeshRiad is a Bangladeshi filmmaker based in Glasgow, known for his poetic and thought-provoking approach to storytelling.His Scottish Documentary Institute-supported short documentary A Border Between Us premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2023 and went on to screen at BFI London Film Festival and Doc NYC, winning Best Short Film at the UK Asian Film Festival in 2024.His earlier short films, including Where is Home, A Bus Ride, and A Fishing Story, have screened at festivals worldwide.
