East End My Friend's home turf of Riddrie played host to two cinemas, and there were many more throughout the east end. The reason we know so much about Glasgow's (and Scotland's) cinema history is beacuse of the Scottish Cinemas website, run by Gary Painter and Gordon Barr. It's an incredible resource that might make you a bit sad about how much our communal cinemagoing culture has shrunk, but will make you even more determined to support the cinemas, film clubs and other initiatives that do still exist.Gary Painter studied history and archaeology at the University of Glasgow and supported these studies with a part-time job in the Odeon Cinema in Renfield Street. One night, one of the senior projectionists showed him photos of the interior as it once was, which set his industrial archaeology senses twitching. Thus began a love affair with crawling around in voids and peering through hatches to find forgotten remnants of buildings much altered over the years. He now works as a Stage Doorkeeper at Glasgow's Theatre Royal.East End My Friend is a collective of people living in the east end of Glasgow who want to use arts and culture to bring our communities together. We want to learn about and amplify the histories of our neighbourhoods and provide platforms for local artists to share their work. In doing this we hope to strenghten community ties, combat alienation and be part of fostering a thriving local arts scene. - **Event URL**: https://allevents.in/glasgow/east-end-cinemas-an-illustrated-talk-by-gary-painter-scottish-cinemas/100002000255377680 - **Event Categories**: art, theatre, entertainment - **Interested Audience**: - total_interested_count: 0 - **Event Highlights**: - Duration: 1 hour - Location: Riddrie Library - Languages: English ## Ticket Details - **Ticket Price Range**: min: 0, max: 0, currency: GBP ## Event venue details - **city**: Glasgow - **state**: SC - **country**: United Kingdom - **location**: Riddrie Library - **lat**: 55.8712994 - **long**: -4.1870532 - **full address**: Riddrie Library, 1020 Cumbernauld Road, Glasgow, United Kingdom ## Event gallery - **Alt text**: East End Cinemas - an illustrated talk by Gary Painter (Scottish Cinemas) - **Image URL**: https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/0da64810764fca36ebb9582e9447c73dc5c9f69b7d19501e28b0fc95de895241-rimg-w1131-h1600-dcf8f8f8-gmir.jpg?v=1790489801 ## FAQs - **Q**: When and where is East End Cinemas - an illustrated talk by Gary Painter (Scottish Cinemas) being held? - **A:** East End Cinemas - an illustrated talk by Gary Painter (Scottish Cinemas) takes place on Tue, 20 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm to Tue, 20 Oct, 2026 at 07:00 pm at Riddrie Library, 1020 Cumbernauld Road, Glasgow, United Kingdom. - **Q**: Who is organizing East End Cinemas - an illustrated talk by Gary Painter (Scottish Cinemas)? - **A:** East End Cinemas - an illustrated talk by Gary Painter (Scottish Cinemas) is organized by East End My Friend. - **Q**: Who is this event for?
