The meeting provides a dedicated forum to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, with a particular focus on the role of integrated distribution and transmission (D/T) power system planning in enabling the transition to Net Zero. The programme features keynote contributions and a panel session bringing together experts from industry and academia to discuss emerging challenges, opportunities, and best practices in coordinated network planning. Electrified road and rail transport systems are evolving from passive energy consumers into active energy hubs capable of providing flexibility, resilience, and low-carbon energy services. This presentation examines how integrated planning approaches can support this transition through two complementary case studies from the UK transport sector.The first study investigates integrated energy systems (IESs) for motorway service areas (MSAs) under transport decarbonisation pathways involving battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). A transport-driven planning framework is developed by combining behavioural traffic modelling, queueing theory, renewable generation, energy storage, hydrogen infrastructure, and grid reinforcement planning. Traffic uncertainty is addressed through empirical chance constraints, while extreme operating conditions are evaluated using Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). Results from representative UK motorway service areas demonstrate that integrated energy systems can reduce annualised system costs by up to 68%, lower carbon emissions, and significantly improve resilience by reducing electricity shortages and eliminating hydrogen supply deficits during compound stress events.The second study focuses on flexible traction power supply systems and their capability to deliver distribution network flexibility services under UK Power Networks (UKPN) flexibility product rules. A two-stage framework is proposed, combining deterministic planning of photovoltaic generation and hybrid energy storage systems with robust assessment based on Information Gap Decision Theory (IGDT). The methodology explicitly considers Long-Term Scheduled Utilisation (LTSU), Scheduled Availability and Operational Utilisation (SAOU), and Day-Ahead Scheduled Utilisation (DASU) requirements. The results show that flexibility value depends strongly on service-window characteristics, traction load baselines, and storage system design, highlighting the need for product-specific and uncertainty-aware planning approaches.Together, these studies demonstrate how transport energy infrastructures can support distribution network decarbonisation while enhancing system flexibility and resilience. The findings provide insights for network operators, transport stakeholders, and policymakers seeking to integrate rapidly growing transport energy demands into future low-carbon distribution systems.How the Transitional Regional Energy Strategic Plan Strengthens Distribution Future Energy Scenarios - Margi Shah, Senior Engineer, Scottish Power NetworkElectricity networks are central to the Net Zero transition. By 2050, rising demand, rapid growth in distributed generation, and increasing storage deployment will place far greater pressure on distribution networks than they were originally designed for. Understanding how and where this change will occur is essential for planning timely, efficient and coordinated investment. This is the role of the Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES): to map credible pathways to Net Zero and highlight the locations and technologies that will drive future network needs.The publication of the Transitional Regional Energy Strategic Plan (tRESP) by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) in January 2026 marks a major shift in how Great Britain approaches future energy planning. It introduces a consistent national framework for assumptions, pathways and strategic needs, creating a shared evidence base for assessing future demand, generation and flexibility requirements. As a result, this year’s DFES is strongly shaped by the tRESP and reflects its whole system, regionally focused approach.The presentation will outline what DFES is, what the tRESP introduces, and how the two processes now work together.
