What Is Black Lotus Yoga?
Black Lotus Yoga is a modern interpretation of vinyasa yoga created and shared by well known international Ashtanga teacher, Ty Landrum. The idea was born from his devotion to Ashtanga and nurtured during the global lockdown. He’s rooted these new sequences in tradition – a synthesis of classic Hatha and Vinyasa – but they feel modern and alive.
The practices are structured into six distinct sequences (or “series”) and each can be practiced in three shades - white (accessible), gray (challenging) and black (deep and demanding). Designed specifically for a Mysore-style self guided practice the practices are led by the breath and deeply individual.
What Can You Expect?
�1. The six well-crafted sequences offer you a framework for exploration. You can shift between shades – white, gray, black – according to how you’re feeling and what your body needs.
�2. A strong emphasis on the energetic interplay between inhalation (prana) and exhalation (apana) to bring alignment from the inside out.
�3. Practices which weave in subtle bandha and mudra work, drawing from traditional Hatha techniques.
4. Space to find your own level - familiarity with Vinyasa or Mysore-style practise helps but no prior experience is required.
Focus & Purpose of the First Series
The aim? To explore the internal patterns of breath and movement
Its purpose: to ground, guide and tune the body-mind
This weekend workshop will guide you through Series 1 – your gateway into Black Lotus Yoga:
- Morning practice on Saturday is a guided session focused solely on the First Series and an exploration of white, gray and black options.
- The afternoon workshop unpacks the postures one by one, covering alignment, energetic balance and practice technique.
- Pull everything you’ve learned together in a self guided Mysore style session on Sunday morning.
- Although called Black Lotus, there’s no lotus until the third series and even then, it’s optional – this allows you to prepare your hips for lotus without injury to the knees.
The practices don’t mean giving up your Ashtanga practice – they offer an opportunity to explore enriching, fun and complementary sequences.
