Here, though, I want to look back at our history and more particularly the story of one of my predecessors. This story starts with a portrait wedged behind a photocopier in Bristol and takes us to postwar New York via the trenches of the First World War and Algiers. It’s the story of the discipline’s origins in the UK and its relationship to the geo-political upheavals of the early twentieth century.
