5th Annual Anniversary of the “Appalachian Bearded Feud”

aka the “ABM Family Reunion”

We’re doing it again — bigger, better, and stronger than ever — bringing one big ol’ Family Reunion to life in 2026! Once again, we’re uniting beards and beauties on one stage, in one unforgettable weekend.

Just imagine sitting on the deck overlooking Winterplace Lake, soaking in the sun and the sounds of… nature. 🌲

As I’ve always described this event: once you exit the interstate, the nearest “city” is about 30 minutes away — Princeton to the south or Beckley to the north. Nestled at the base of Flat Top Mountain, home of Winterplace Ski Resort, this location truly offers a peaceful escape.

Everything you could want is right here — venue, lodging, high-end dining, bar service, and nonstop entertainment. Every year brings new twists and surprises, and 2026 will be no exception.

What’s Planned

Friday – June 5th

Note: Each planned activity will have its own detailed post in the weeks to come. (Very important you click on the going or interested button so all this information is viewed).

~ We have two excursions planned for Friday:
	
   • A return to a fan favorite — the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine Tour.
	• And a chance to explore new heights with the Bridge Walk Tour, a guided experience along the catwalk beneath the New River Gorge Bridge, offering a breathtaking perspective from 851 feet above the river.

~ So when we ask whether you’re taking the high road or the low road… we may mean that quite literally. 😉

~ Next up, we introduce the First Annual “Grill Master Bearded Competition”!
Eight two-man teams will bring their best grilling skills to the table, with judges crowning the winners. Trophies and bragging rights will be awarded!

~ During the day Friday there will be a sign up list for the ultimate “Tug O War” contest which concludes on Saturday, warm ups / side betting will be held throughout the day Friday! 

~ At 7:00 PM, the Appalachian Bearded Build-Off kicks off. Ten participants will receive a mystery bag of supplies, a glue gun, and one hour to create the best beard they can using only what’s provided. Judging begins at 8:00 PM, with trophies awarded to the top three competitors.

~ Then at 10:00 PM, we unveil a brand-new twist — once the kiddos are tucked in, the adults take over! Get ready for an “adult” comedy show featuring our very own brother “Sam Canterbury”, bringing laughs, stories, and probably a few drinks along with him.

And of course, we can’t forget our singing troubadour Allister Stolas, with brother Matt Hatfield periodically playing on stage all evening… You never know who those two might bring along… there may even be a surprise “hippie” sighting. 👀

Saturday – June 6th
	•	Breakfast Buffet: 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM (Dining Room), dining room closes for clean up. 
	•	Vendor Setup: Begins at 10:00 AM
	•	Food & Refreshments: Start back at 11:00 AM and continue into the evening
	•	Live Music: Begins at Noon with a new twist joining the musician line up! 
   • Returning this year will be the notorious “Lego Walk” 
    • Also the mini golf course is planned to return! 

~ At 1:00 PM, the world-famous “Hepcat Honeys” take the stage to present the;

3rd Annual “Miss Mountain Momma Pageant”.

~ Beard Competition Registration: Noon – 2:00 PM

~ At 3:00 PM, the judges take the stage and the “Appalachian Bearded Feud” begins!

~ Kids’ trophies will be awarded immediately following their category. All other trophies will be presented at the end of the competition, just prior to the Best in Show category.

~ 6 pm the “new” added “Tug O War” contest between the “Hatfield side versus the McCoy side” who shall win it this year? 

~ After the beard competition, musicians will continue playing throughout the evening — please show them your support!

Our 2026 Benefactor

Now, let’s talk about why we are coming together this year.

I intentionally held off on announcing our 2026 benefactor until final confirmations were completed  — and because this year is deeply emotional and personal for me. I truly appreciate everyone’s patience.

Family, over the past five years, I’ve planned and hosted nine charity events, while supporting many more through donations and hands-on involvement. That’s what we do — that’s giving back.

But this year… this benefactor means more to me than ever before.

Hospice care touches countless families during the most difficult moments of their lives. Only a few people know this, but my mother passed away this past November at the age of 96. In her final days, hospice care showed me its true meaning firsthand. Knowing someone was there with her during her final hours is a feeling that can only be understood by living it.

So in this milestone year — as we celebrate our 5th Anniversary — we are honored to raise funds for the “Raleigh County Hospice Association”.

Hospice organizations have likely touched nearly every life in one way or another. Their compassion, dignity, and unwavering support for both patients and families deserve recognition and continued support.

I apologize for not sharing this sooner. Important conversations and meetings needed to take place first. As always within the ABM community, it’s vital to us that our fundraising directly supports local charities and benefits the communities we call home.

Thank you for standing beside me, this growing family, and our mission.
