About the program:

Join historian and author Stephen Evangelista as he explores Forever Silenced: The Story of the Gettysburg Gun, a sweeping and authoritative account of one of the American Civil War’s most enduring artifacts. The Gettysburg Gun is the only known artillery piece that fought at the Battle of Gettysburg and survives today on its original wooden gun carriage.

This presentation traces the extraordinary journey of the Gettysburg Gun from its casting in Boston in 1862, through the crucible of the Civil War, to its present-day home in Rhode Island. It is a powerful story of endurance, sacrifice, and honor—spanning three centuries of American history.

About our Speaker:

Stephen is the author of three critically recognized works on American Civil War history. His first book, Our Story: The Lives and Legacy of Those Who Served in Battery B, First Rhode Island Light Artillery (2021), was selected for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Gettysburg National Park Library and Research Center and received recognition from numerous scholarly and military institutions, including the U.S. Army War College and the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. The book has been featured in Civil War Times and across national television, radio, and podcast platforms.

His second book, Forever Silenced: The Story of the Gettysburg Gun (2024), has been added to the permanent collections of both the Gettysburg National Park Library and Research Center and the Adams County Historical Society. The work was featured on Addressing Gettysburg and shortlisted for the Gettysburg Bachelder–Coddington Award.

In November 2025, Stephen published his third book, No Sacrifice Too Great: The Letters and Diary of Sergeant Albert Aaron Straight, which presents the life and service of the Rhode Island volunteer who commanded the famed Gettysburg Gun on July 3, 1863.

Stephen graduated valedictorian from Providence College and pursued advanced academic study at the Harvard Extension School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a dedicated living historian and serves as a corporate officer and active member of Battery B, First Rhode Island Light Artillery. He is also a member of the United States Field Artillery Association.

Stephen is a senior federal executive, where he serves as Chief of Digital Services at the Social Security Administration and has been a distinguished member of the Senior Executive Service since 2013.

A native of Rhode Island, Stephen resides in Maryland with his wife and two children.

Meetings run from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, doors open at 6:30pm.
