- **Event Name**: Guided Edible Plant Walk with Guest Host Russ Cohen
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 18 May, 2026 at 10:00 am – Mon, 18 May, 2026 at 11:00 am (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Did you know that Georgetown and the surrounding towns are home to over 80 species of edible wild plants—many of them more nutritious and flavorful than what you’ll find at the grocery store?

Join us for a relaxed and eye-opening guided farm walk with renowned local foraging expert Russ Cohen, author of Wild Plants I Have Known… and Eaten, for an hour-long ramble through the fields, woods, and edges of Great Rock Farm.

Along the way, Russ will introduce you to over a dozen edible wild plants, including:
	•	Native species like Fox Grape and Shagbark Hickory
	•	Non-native “weeds” such as Chicory and Burdock
	•	Invasive plants like Japanese Knotweed and Autumn Olive

You’ll learn how to confidently identify each plant, which parts are edible, when they’re in season, and how they can be prepared in the kitchen. Russ will also share essential guidelines for safe, ethical, and environmentally responsible foraging, so you leave feeling informed, inspired, and connected to the landscape around you.

This walk is perfect for curious nature lovers, gardeners, foodies, herbalists, and anyone who wants to see the farm (and their local environment) with fresh eyes.

About Your Guide: Russ Cohen
Until his retirement in 2015, Russ Cohen served as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration, with a focus on riparian vegetation. Today, he devotes his time to his lifelong passion: connecting people to nature through wild, edible plants.

Often described as a modern-day “Johnny Appleseed” for native edible species, Russ runs a small nursery in Weston where he propagates hundreds of plants from seed—many collected by hand or sourced through organizations like the Native Plant Trust. He partners with land trusts, towns, schools, farms, tribal groups, and agencies to plant these species in appropriate public and private spaces. Over the past decade, he has collaborated on more than two dozen planting projects across the region.
