* Dit concert werd verplaatst naar De Centrale, ticketkopers werden op de hoogte gebracht. 

Het jaar was 1969. Een groep kids uit Long Beach, California had de guts om zich WAR te noemen, op een moment dat vrede dé slogan was tijdens de massale Vietnamprotesten in Amerika. Vandaag, nu politiek opnieuw luid aanwezig is in de popmuziek, klinkt de boodschap van War brandend actueel. Hun muziek weerspiegelt het straatleven, snijdt maatschappelijke thema’s aan en draagt een blijvende boodschap van eenheid en verbinding.

Het succes liet niet lang op zich wachten. Met nummers als “Low Rider”, “The Cisco Kid”, “Spill the Wine” (met Eric Burdon van The Animals, die mee aan de basis van de band stond) en “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” brak War wereldwijd door. De band werd al snel bekend om haar unieke mix van funk, soul, jazz, rock, latin en rhythm and blues, gedragen door sociaal bewuste teksten.

Door de jaren heen had War een blijvende invloed op funk, hiphop en popmuziek. Hun songs worden tot vandaag gesampled en gedraaid, en de band bleef onafgebroken spelen: van intieme clubs tot grote festivals, waaronder North Sea Jazz. Wat War nog altijd bijzonder maakt, is hun sterke nadruk op groove, blazers, percussie en muzikale diversiteit, én hun multiculturele samenstelling — iets wat destijds vrij uniek was. En die politiek natuurlijk. 

Een levende legende op ons podium, en muziek die niets van haar glans verloren is: WAR.

DJ Ole Sollied draait de avond aan elkaar en is uw host voor dit bijzonder concert. Een allround non-dj die eens per kwartaal zijn rijk gevulde platenbak (curverboxen!) bovenhaalt. Zweert nog altijd bij Rocksteady van Aretha Franklin. Must be a Son of a Preacher Man!
