Taking place within the exhibition space, this special programme of talks accompanying brings together art and science to explore the deep sea, coral reefs, and oceanic worlds through art, research and dialogue.
Artist Michele Allen and Dr. Gary Caldwell, Senior Lecturer in Applied Marine Biology at Newcastle University, discuss coastal ecologies and the devastating mass die-off of marine species along the North East coast, reflecting on our fragile connection with ocean habitats.
Artist Rob Smith, joined by a guest scientist, discusses the histories and futures of deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules and the recent discovery of ‘dark oxygen’ on the ocean floor, which has called into question how life began on Earth.
