So I’ve been sharing lots of sounds lately for Club Martinique so what was Club Martinique?? A little history …

In 1955 Club Martinique was situated in the long since demolished Royal Arcade on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle. It was the place to go for the youth of Newcastle to dance, listen to music and hang out. At the time the Club Martinique was so popular it’s dancers were featured in a ‘Jazz On Tyneside’ piece in the Picture Post. One young couple were photographed doing the Jitterbug dance (an energetic style of Lindy Hop) while others are shown in their 50s finery. The club subsequently moved to Melbourne Street and was renamed the New Orleans Club. Eric Burdon of The Animals regularly sang there with his first group the Kansas City 5.

NOW, inspired by all of this CLUB MARTINIQUE is back! well sort of .. �). So if you fancy hearing some of the swingiest, boppin, Rockin and jumpin rhythm and blues then head on down to Station East on Sunday 5th October (2-6pm).
