A chance for North East-based filmmakers to screen unfinished work, test ideas, and get honest reactions in the room.We’re inviting filmmakers working across narrative short film, documentary and artists’ moving image to share a section of their project (up to 15 minutes). Each screening will be followed by a short discussion with the audience, a chance to hear what’s working, what’s surprising people, and what might help shape the next stage of your film.Each session, we’ll invite a guest to offer feedback and support about your projects. For this first event we are joined by filmmaker Harry Lawson, whose recent film Stepney Western was supported by Doc Society.This is a supportive, informal space to share early work, connect with other filmmakers, and get valuable feedback before your film is finished. He lives and works in Newcastle.Lawson’s approach is deeply collaborative, prioritising long-term engagement with participants. Projects develop slowly, often over several years embedded within a community. Through film, installation and public art, Lawson’s work focuses on how communities are seen and how they see themselves.Lawson has been supported by BFI Doc Society, Arts Council England, and Wellcome Trust, and featured in publications such as The Guardian, Art Monthly, e-flux, British Journal of Photography, The Face, and The Quietus. Recent screenings and exhibitions include GSFF (Glasgow), NCA (Newcastle), BFMAF (Berwick-upon-Tweed), Chemist Gallery (London), Zumzeig (Barcelona) and Floating (Berlin).Screen and Tell is presented as part of Baltic’s Artist Development Programme and Baltic Cinema in partnership with Film Hub North, and is all about creating space for experimentation, conversation, and creative development.Baltic CinemaBaltic Cinema is a new year-round cinema programme at Baltic, lighting up our Level 1 Cinema with the best new and archive films. Bringing otherwise rarely-screened work to the North East, Baltic Cinema also expands our exhibitions, offering a chance to explore further some of the themes they raise.Baltic Cinema has five strands:Currents presents new work from across the worldSources expands on our exhibitionsSelected shows films selected by our artists and partnersQuayside Kino is a monthly screening for families and childrenNews From Home offers films on and from the North East, for the people who live hereAll regular screenings take place in our Level 1 Cinema.
