A special screening of Amber Films’ acclaimed North Shields fishing drama, with an introduction by producer and researcher Andy Robson.

In Fading Light is a feature drama set within the declining fishing industry of North Shields. The film centres on the upheaval caused in a traditional fishing community by the unexpected arrival of a young woman.

To authentically depict the community, Amber Films purchased and operated a 63-foot anchor seine netter, integrating themselves into the daily routines of the fishermen. Actors auditioning for roles found themselves at sea for days, gutting fish alongside seasoned fishermen. When the story required a storm sequence, cast, crew, and fishermen set sail into a Force 9 gale, with tripods anchored to the deck.

The screenplay was written by local writer Tom Hadaway, who had a lifetime's experience on the fish quay. His intimate knowledge of the community enriched the narrative, capturing the authentic voices and struggles of those within the fishing industry. The filmmakers and actors brought a commitment to authenticity that was almost heroic, resulting in a film that stands as a testament to the realities and resilience of a community facing inevitable change.

Andy Robson is the BFI FAN Champion for Screen Heritage, working in collaboration with Film Hub Northern Ireland, encouraging independent exhibitors to engage with the UK’s moving image collections. He also oversees BFI Film Academy Specialist Residentials in collaboration with Showroom, Sheffield, and is a trustee of the Berwick Film Media and Arts Festival.

Doors open 14:00; Film starts 14:15. Baltic Kitchen is open for drinks, which you are welcome to take up to the cinema.
