Explore the lesser-known histories of Kirkcudbright as an artists’ town.  

Coming Out of the Archives, with a particular focus on Dorothy Johnstone, Vera 'Jack' Holme, Anne Finlay and Cecile Walton this exhibition will bring together artworks and artefacts including diaries, letters and photographs. This exhibition celebrates the bohemian lives of the women artists who spent their summers here in the early 20th century. 

At the heart of the exhibition is ‘The Story of a Fairy Family’, a hand-illustrated book created collaboratively by Johnstone, Holme, Finlay and Walton in 1918. This playful and poignant fairy-tale - in which the artists portray themselves and their chosen family - offers insight into the emotional depth of their relationships.

Their story is told using their own words, imagery and personal belongings, with additional contributions from the families of Dorothy Johnstone and Vera Holme, author Wendy Moore, pupils of Kirkcudbright Academy, and local community members.
The Story of a Fairy Family has been developed in collaboration with DJ McDowall of The Imaginarium, as part of their Pride of Place project. It has been co-produced with young people from Kirkcudbright Academy. This exhibition has been supported by The Holywood Trust.
