CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS – large ensemble of kids and teens (35 – 40)
Willy Wonka: Mysterious, charismatic, and a bit mischievous. Wonka is the mastermind behind the chocolate factory and the Golden Ticket contest. Requires strong stage presence, quick shifts between humor and seriousness, and a confident vocal performance.
Charlie Bucket: The heart of the story—humble, kind, and full of wonder. Charlie should read as young, with an unchanged voice, and bring sincerity and enthusiasm to every scene.
Grandpa Joe: Charlie’s spirited and supportive grandfather. He’s warm, optimistic, and shares Charlie’s sense of adventure. Strong acting chops are key; singing is secondary.
Mr. & Mrs. Bucket: Loving, nurturing parents who encourage Charlie’s dreams. Both sing in family numbers and may double as Oompa-Loompas later in the show.
Augustus Gloop: A gluttonous boy from Germany who adores chocolate. Comedic timing and physicality are essential.
Mrs. Gloop: – mom to Augustus; equally indulgent and proud
Veruca Salt: A spoiled, demanding rich girl who always gets her way. Full of lair and confidence.
Mr. Salt: Veruca’s father, caters to her every whim.
Violet Beauregarde: A gum-chewing, fame-seeking girl with attitude. Violet should be bold and sassy.
Mrs. Beauregarde: Violet’s mother; proud stage mom type.
Mike Teavee: A tech-obsessed boy who’s glued to screens. Needs a performer with high energy and a rebellious streak.
Ms. Teavee: Mike’s parent, Ms. Teavee, is overwhelmed and exasperated.
Phineous Trout: A flashy reporter who announces the Golden Ticket winners. Needs a strong announcer voice and stage presence.
Candy Man: A cheerful vendor who introduces the world of candy. Charisma and vocal strength are key.
Candy Man Kids: Neighborhood children who sing and interact with Charlie. Flexible ensemble roles that can double as Oompa-Loompas.
Grandma Georgina, Grandma Josephina, Grandpa George: Charlie’s quirky grandparents. Fun character roles with comic timing.
Oompa-Loompas: The factory’s whimsical workers. Great ensemble roles for creative movement, group singing, and colorful staging. Strong dance skills desired.
