Due to the shocking and problematic influx of cats and dogs in Gansbaai and surrounding areas, Adele Kokt (FirstRand Volunteer), Sheryll Steyn (Animals@Peace) and Dee Henderson (@FosteringAnimals) decided to take hands, put together a team of volunteers, get as many partners involved as possible, and get a Steri-Thon up and running.
The project was inspired 100% by BEING IN THE FIELD and seeing the direct result of the heartbreaking reality when cats, and especially dogs, are not sterilized and dewormed.

The vision of the Steri-Thon is to see less to no pups lose their lives for being classified as unwanted, starving due to worm infestations, emaciated moms, barely able to feed themselves trying to feed up to 10 pups.
This will prevent pups as young as 3 weeks old being sold, stolen to be sold, or killed as owners don't want them. Dying from worms and/or hunger, or moms decapitating the weakest of the litter. Severe stress, sick or injured pups, inadequate maternal instincts, hormonal imbalances, and the list goes on.
Our hope for this project is to play a role in preventing fights between males due to females in heat. The amount of puncture wounds, throats ripped open, badly infected wounds, with no financial means for the owner to take an animal to the vet, means the animal could get killed by the owner as a last resort.
Mission - Apart from the sterilization, the animals will also be dewormed, treated for ticks and fleas, and get the rabies vaccination.
This is the first Steri-Thon and will be a continued project. Every Steri-Thon will be dedicated to a specific animal that left their footprints in our hearts. This year, we chose Diego. The story of Diego's legacy - he was a warrior, street wise with a heart of gold, a soft soul. He lived on the streets (van Dyk street), and Gansbaai harbour was "his spot". Humans tried to help, and he was moved from the harbour. Diego was in the process of recovery when his life was taken. He had a second chance, but never got to live it.
If WE (everyone, whether it's the community, law departments, organizations, who-ever, where-ever, stand as one, we CAN make a difference for the INNOCENT and VOICELESS, but we need to manage it... all the time.
