If you’ve ever made use of closed captioning on TV, you can thank Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin. After her groundbreaking performance in Randa Haines’ 1986 film Children of a Lesser God, Matlin became a tireless champion of accessibility rights for the hearing-impaired.

Directed by deaf actor/filmmaker Shoshanna Stern, this immersive, crowd-pleasing film explores Matlin’s trailblazing career, including iconic guest roles in The West Wing, The Practice and Seinfeld.

Speaking almost entirely in American Sign Language, Matlin reflects on her difficult childhood, her struggle with addiction, her abusive relationship with William Hurt, her role in the deaf community and her fight for equality in Hollywood.

Decades after making history as the first deaf person to win an Oscar, Matlin was back at the Academy Awards in 2022 with Sian Heder's film CODA. Having made her participation in the film contingent on casting deaf actors to play deaf characters – leading to Troy Kotsur becoming only the 2nd deaf actor to win an Oscar – Matlin was finally able to share a heartfelt and deceptively simple message from the Oscar stage: “I’m not alone anymore.”

MARLEE MATLIN: NOT ALONE ANYMORE screens at 7:30 pm at ArtSpring on Wednesday, February 11. Tickets are $15 at http://www.artspring.ca; by phone (250-537-2102) or in person (Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm); or at the door an hour before showtime.

• March 27 at Mahon Hall: GEORGIA O'KEEFFE: THE BRIGHTNESS OF LIGHT (co-presented with Salt Spring Arts)

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The 2026 Salt Spring Film Festival takes place at Gulf Islands Secondary School from Friday, February 27, through Sunday, March 1. This year's festival will include over 40 documentaries, including a surprising number of Canadian & BC Premieres, with attending film guests from BC, Yukon and Washington State.
