Brazilian Rhythms Through Body Percussion & Melody

This fun and practical workshop is all about experiencing the some of the rhythms, melodies, and culture of Brazil through movement, music-making, and collaboration.

The workshop is led by flautist/pianist Mila Maia and percussionist Gustavo Lobão, two active musicians based in Galway, originally from Santos, Brazil.

We’ll explore two key Brazilian rhythms — Ijexá and Maxixe — starting with a bit of background on where they come from and what makes them unique. Then, we’ll get moving with body percussion exercises that are important keys to feel the groove in your body. It’s a playful and powerful way to build rhythm skills and connect with the music.

After we’ve locked in the feel of the rhythms, we’ll move on to instruments and voice. Participants will have the chance to explore how these rhythms work with melodies, either by singing or playing your own melodic instrument. The workshop is open to all and is great for mixed groups — whether you're a curious beginner, a music student, or a more experienced player looking to try something new.

At the end of the session, we’ll put everything together into a group arrangement and record it.

Everybody involved will have access to all the material presented in the workshop.
