Tweed Smith is a Houston-born vocalist known for her versatility across blues, jazz, gospel, funk, and soul.
She made history as the only female member of the legendary funk band War, contributing to albums and tours around their late-70s/early-80s peak.
Before that, she performed in the national tour of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
After her time with War, she moved to New York, where she deepened her jazz career.
Beyond performing, she’s a dedicated educator and mentor — working with the Community Music Center of Houston, directing choirs, running youth programs, and organizing therapeutic music workshops.
Her musical roots run deep in church — she grew up singing gospel, playing tambourine, and steeped in her family’s musical tradition.
In recognition of her long and influential career, she received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, underscoring her legacy in music and community engagement.
