Drawing equally from Appalachian banjo traditions, psychedelic rock, American folk mythology, free improvisation, and contemporary songwriting, BIG MACHINE creates music that exists outside of easy categorization. Their songs inhabit a landscape where old stories collide with modern anxieties, where ancient musical traditions are treated not as artifacts but as living technologies for understanding the present. At the center of the project is Swain's fascination with folk music as a form of time travel. A fiddle tune from the nineteenth century, a gospel harmony, a field recording, a psychedelic drone, and a newly written song are all treated as parts of the same conversation. The result is a sound that is simultaneously familiar and strange—deeply rooted yet relentlessly exploratory. Featuring an all-star cast of musicians from British Columbia's folk, roots, jazz, and independent music communities, BIG MACHINE moves fluidly between tightly arranged songs, collective improvisation, and expansive sonic landscapes. Their performances can feel like a front-porch string band, a rock-and-roll revival meeting, or an experiment in musical archaeology unfolding in real time.

Rather than recreating the past, BIG MACHINE imagines alternate futures for traditional music. Led by Swain's distinctive voice, banjo, and bass playing, the band creates immersive performances that invite audiences into a world where memory, myth, place, and possibility coexist.
