Pump Action and The Retrograde

Pump Action is a drunk backflip off a moving vehicle, executed with perfect form. Simply put, they kick ass. Emanating from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, this group of killers root their approach to the new wave of funk rock in a refined knowledge of jazz fusion techniques and theories- but this is not just a show for jazz kids. With high flying guitar solos and soaring vocals, all rooted in a groove that is anything but restrained, Pump Action honors the breakneck motion of their funk forefathers to make it simply impossible for an audience to stand still. The Retrograde is not the first band to find inspiration in the classics, but they are without a doubt the first to do so with the level of respect and originality that they are speedily becoming synonymous with. While many of their contemporaries with a flair for vintage romantics and beat down tube amps find themselves falling into patters of imitation rather than inspiration, our Tallahassee boys stay classic but never stale, vintage but never dusty. - Rob Lucchesi
