The evening opens with Sitka's Hidden Wonders, a stunning 43-minute nature documentary by wildlife filmmaker Ben Hamilton. After nearly two decades filming around the world, Hamilton returns to Sitka, Alaska — the place where it all began — to reveal the hidden layers of one of North America's wildest coastal ecosystems. Humpbacks feed in nutrient-rich waters, bears wander temperate rainforests, and bioluminescent plankton spark life from the deep. It's a film about slowing down, looking closer, and truly seeing a place.


The second film, From Sea to Shining Sea (37 min), explores the remarkable life of Katharine Lee Bates — poet, professor, and social reformer — best known as the author of "America the Beautiful." As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, this documentary reminds us how Bates' vision of the nation — its beauty, its promise, and its unfinished work — remains as relevant as ever.


Following the screening of From Sea to Shining Sea, director John de Graaf will join us in person for a live Q&A. Bring your questions.


Both films are from the 2025 Friday Harbor Film Festival program. This screening is presented as part of FHFF's 2026 Best of the Fest series — free monthly documentary screenings on San Juan and Lopez Islands, January through September.
