Raven grew up on Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands, and his work began at age sixteen. He was mentored by Lark Dalton, who taught him to build glassblowing equipment and trained him in traditional Venetian technique. He attended Pilchuck Glass School and continued his mentorship with renowned glass artists including Lino Tagliapietra. In 2003 he joined the William Morris team, working with them until Morris's retirement in 2007.

Since establishing his own studio, Raven has traveled extensively — from Japan to Norway, Italy, Denmark, and Turkey — teaching, giving demonstrations, and working as an artist in residence. His sculptures have been shown internationally in both solo and group exhibitions.

Drawing on the natural surroundings where he grew up, his work is almost entirely rooted in the marine ecosystem. From seashells to squid, it encourages viewers to pay attention to the delicate balance of nature — an equilibrium that is often overlooked or taken for granted.

"Fluid Life: Glass Sculptures Inspired by the Sea" is on view in the Sterner Atrium Gallery through September 14.
