There’s never been a more exciting time to lace up a pair of skates and hit the ice.
With Olympic hockey capturing the world’s attention and inspiring the next generation of players, Fremont Flyers Hockey and Sidner Ice Arena are inviting local kids to discover the thrill of the game during USA Hockey’s National Try Hockey For Free Day on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sidner Ice Arena.
The event is part of a nationwide initiative designed to introduce children to hockey in a fun, safe, and completely free environment. No prior skating or hockey experience is required — just a willingness to try something new.
Whether your child dreams of scoring the game-winning Olympic goal or just wants to learn to skate and make new friends, this is the perfect opportunity to get started.
Growing the Game — One Skater at a Time
Fremont Flyers Hockey President Warren Peters says the event is about building excitement and opportunity for kids in the community.
“Hockey continues to grow across the country, and initiatives like Try Hockey For Free Day are a tremendous way to introduce families to the sport,” said Peters. “When kids watch Olympic hockey, they see the speed, the teamwork, and the excitement. This event gives them a chance to experience that same energy right here at home — at no cost. We’re proud to be part of a national movement that makes the game accessible and welcoming to everyone.”
Participants will receive on-ice instruction from experienced coaches and volunteers who will guide them through the basics in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere. Equipment is typically available for use during the event, making it easy for families to give hockey a try without a financial commitment.
Sidner Ice Arena Proud to Host
Sidner Ice Arena Director Angie Wyle says the arena is thrilled to open its doors for this national event.
“We are so excited to host Try Hockey For Free Day at Sidner Ice Arena,” said Wyle. “There’s nothing better than seeing kids step on the ice for the first time and realize they can do this. It’s fun, it’s active, and it builds confidence. We love being able to provide that opportunity for families in our community.”
Sidner Ice Arena also offers an Intro to Hockey program designed specifically to teach children the fundamentals of skating, stickhandling, and teamwork in a structured, beginner-friendly environment. While the current session is wrapping up, another session will be offered this fall ahead of the hockey season.
In addition, the rink is expanding beginner opportunities this spring with a brand-new NHL Street Hockey program launching in April — providing even more ways for kids to get involved in the sport both on and off the ice.
