Experience the programs and rituals of world famous Jagannath Puri at Fremont Temple through the year. By the grace of Shree Jagannatha, senior members from Odia American community of Bay Area laid the foundation of the first Jagannatha Mandir in California at Fremont Hindu Temple (Vedic Dharma Samaj) in 1994. It was a blessing for all the Jagannatha devotees across communities to be able to perform the rituals of Shree Jagannatha in their adopted country. The temple management and Odia community members continue the Jagannatha culture, traditions and rituals. Such programs help our community in cultural immersion and knowledge transfer of our rich heritage to the new generations while staying connected to their roots. Its also spreads awareness to the larger community about Odisha.
Fremont Temple and Shree Jagannatha sevaks invite you to the Chariot Festival - where Shree Jagannatha Parivaar come out of their abode to meet their devotees of any caste color or religion. The Rath Yatra/Jatra is dedicated to Shree Jagannatha, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and his sister Goddess Subhadra. The Ratha Yatra celebrates the annual journey of Shree Jagannatha and his two siblings from the 12th-century Jagannatha Temple to His birth place Gundicha Temple, 2.5km away.
Three heavily-built wooden chariots of Shree Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are traditionally pulled by thousands of devotees over a distance of three kilometres twice during the nine-day festival of the Trinity at Puri. After resting for eight days, Shree Jagannatha returns to his main abode and is known as ‘Bahuda Yatra’.
Shree Jagannatha's Rath, Nandighosha (also known as Garudadhwaja, Kapiladhwaja) is about 44 feet tall and has 16 wheels. Balabhadra's chariot is called Taladhwaja or Langaladhwaja, and it stands 43 feet in height and has 14 wheels. While Subhadra's chariot has 12 wheels and it is 42 feet tall. This is the first and only temple in USA that has the original wheel of the Nandighosha Temple is on display.
