L.L.Bean Fly Tying Series

Join our fly-tying experts and learn how to tie some of the most effective flies for both salt and freshwater.

Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings beginning November 5, 2025 and ending March 25, 2026. No classes on December 24 and December 31.

Each night we offer a Beginner Class from 5-6:30pm followed by an Intermediate Class from 7-8:30pm. Please do not sign up for both.

Registration opens one week prior to each class at 8:00 am on this site/eventbrite.

Intermediate Class, Week 5

Sparkle Pupa. The Sparkle Pupa is a caddis emerger pattern that imitates a caddisfly in the process of emerging from its pupal shuck as it rises to the surface. Its antron shroud mimics the gas-bubble effect seen in natural caddis pupae, creating sparkle and lifelike translucence that draws aggressive strikes. This fly is especially effective during caddis hatches, when trout key in on vulnerable insects mid-transition. It should be fished just below the surface or in the film, often with a slow swing or gentle lift to mimic the natural ascent of the emerging caddis.
