Don't miss this opportunity to explore evolutionary biology with an internationally recognized leader in the field.Dr. Dolph Schluter is the world’s foremost authority on the role that ecology plays in the origin and divergence of new species. His work has fundamentally changed our understanding of evolution, revealing the ecological mechanisms driving speciation and probing the factors generating and maintaining biodiversity. The Origin of Modern SpeciesPresentation by Dr. Dolph SchluterBiodiversity is the universe’s crowning achievement, a product of the origin and accumulation of species. New species continue to arise in nature, although the rate is highly uneven over the face of the earth, proving clues to the causes. These days, new species are also being genetically engineered in laboratories. Darwin’s proposal that the origin of wild species — his 'mystery of mysteries’ — occurs by natural selection is now regarded as correct. Our understanding of how this happens has lately been informed by the study of species that formed very recently. I explain how our concept of species has changed since Darwin and use the example of stickleback, a group of fish that include some of the world’s youngest species, to identify ways by which new species evolve. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events6/banners/ed806140-1e1b-11f1-b605-efb0707b8452-rimg-w740-h740-dcffffff-gmir.jpg Backyard History's Andrew MacLean will open the 2026 Priestman Lecture with an introduction to the historical figure after whom this prestigious lecture series is named.ParkingParking is available in green and blue designated lots along Windsor St. with a few additional spaces behind Lady Beaverbrook Residence (building 9).
