Our speaker on January 8 will be: Dr Karl Phillips, a post-doctoral researcher at UNB. He will speak about the wildlife that he encountered on a 23-day trip in February and March of 2025 to the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. He will provide regular doses of the history and geopolitics of human interactions with the Antarctic biosphere. Wildlife includes eight cetaceans, seven penguins, six albatrosses, five pinnipeds, three skuas and the two southernmost vascular plants. Human stories include Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition (and his grave), industrial whaling around South Georgia, Antarctic station life, a first-hand experience of medical evacuation in Antarctica.

Dr Karl Phillips is a researcher at UNB who uses telemetry to study the seaward migration of young Atlantic salmon.
