On March 31st, 2021 a motion was passed by parliament to recognize August 1st as Emancipation Day in Canada.

In celebration of this historic acknowledgment from the federal government, a collection of Black-led organizations are coming together in Fredericton, the capital city of New Brunswick, to bring together Black communities and allies from all across the province.

Starting at 12pm we will be featuring powerful speeches on the steps of Fredericton City Hall. From community leaders across the province including Dr. Mary McCarthy-Brant, James (Skip) Talbot, and many more!  

Inspired by the law abolishing slavery 187 years ago, many of our ancestors walked thousands of kilometers to reach New Brunswick (which was the most northern and last stop on the Underground Railroad). On August 1st, we will honor them by marching from City Hall 1 kilometer, going by the river, to the legislative building.

How do we end this historic day? With free BBQ and live music on the legislative lawn! Different Black-led organizations that work with Black communities around the province will be given platforms to speak during this time to inspire those who want to help put on future events and collaborate on projects.

Also, some of the best photographers from the Black community will be putting on a Photobooth activity looking to capture as much Black beauty and excellence as possible. Let's make every August 1st in this province.
