- **Event Description**: Join us at Landmark Booksellers on Thursday, August 27th at 6:00pm for the release of local author Nathan Johnson’s new book, Surely Goodness and Mercy.

“My beloved little sheep. You were dead but now you are alive; you were lost but now I have found you. It’s time for you to come home.” Surely Goodness and Mercy is a narrative retelling of Psalm 23. Recast within the Parable of the Lost Sheep, it recounts the story of a young sheep who wanders away from the Good Shepherd and finds himself lost and alone. By green pastures and still waters, and through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, the Good Shepherd leads the Lost Sheep home. Written for children and adults, Surely Goodness and Mercy is a picture of the grace that leads the wandering heart back home.

Nathan Johnson is Assistant Dean of Academics, Head of Program, and Teaching Fellow at New College Franklin. Originally from Tennessee with family roots going back to the early 1800s, he has been at NCF since 2020. Before that, he taught high school humanities, theology, and composition at Greyfriars Classical Academy in Matthews, North Carolina. He and his wife Hannah have two children: August Ambrose and Eliza Juliet.

Johnson will be joined by the book’s illustrator, Sarah Howell. Howell lives on a farm in East Tennessee with her husband and their four children. Her illustrations are known for their warm, richly textured watercolor work and a quiet, contemplative eye for storytelling, shaped in large part by her Orthodox Christian faith and the everyday wonder of farm life with a big family. She previously illustrated By Rivers of Water, also written by Nathan Carter Johnson, and is the author-illustrator of several children’s books, including On the Day You Were Baptized: A Sacramental Explanation of Baptism for Children, On the Day of Your First Communion: A Sacramental Explanation of First Communion for Children, and Lift Up Your Hearts: A Liturgical Explanation of Worship for Children. Surely Goodness and Mercy is her latest labor of love, a story she hopes will linger in readers’ hearts long after the last page.
