- **Event Name**: Frankfort Heritage Lecture Series: Commerce on the Kentucky River
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 11 Apr, 2026 at 01:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: The Kentucky River during the 19th century was a vital transportation route within Kentucky. The Kentucky River with its North, Middle and South Forks drain some 7,000 square miles of central and eastern Kentucky. It is 260 miles long, and the North Fork adds 168 miles, the Middle Fork 105 miles, and the South Fork 45 miles. During its commercial life, the river saw timber, coal, oil, lead, fluorspar, salt, and agricultural products move over its waters to market. The Kentucky River was to have been part of a canal that reached from Louisville, Kentucky, to Charleston, South Carolina. It was the terminus for the first railroad in Kentucky and allowed Frankfort to house state government. The last commercial barge operation on the Kentucky River saw sand being barged from Milton, Kentucky, on the Ohio River to Frankfort.

Charles H. Bogart grew up in Newport and Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, and has lived in Frankfort since 1965. He has a BA in history from Thomas More University and a MCP from The Ohio State University. He retired from the Kentucky Department of Emergency Management where he worked in the Hazardous Materials Plans and Operations Section. He is currently employed as a Conductor at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum, Versailles, Kentucky. He has taught at Kentucky State University and Eastern Kentucky University. He has published six books and over 100 articles on military, naval, and railroad history. He is president of the Frankfort Civil War Roundtable, Chessie System Historical Society, and the North American Transit Historical Society. He is editor of the CSX Transportation Historical Society Journal and the Western River Report for the Steamship Historical Society of America. He is a member of VFW Post 4075 here in Frankfort. As a result of his great-grandfather being a private in the 108th Ohio, he is a member of the Sons of Civil War Union Veterans.
