Join Chuck Welsko as he winds through a discussion of Kentucky’s governors up to the Civil War era and unpacks the role in Kentucky’s first century. 

Chuck Welsko is a historian of the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras. He received his PhD from West Virginia University, has worked for Ford’s Theatre Society and the National Park Service at Fredricksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park, the University of West Georgia, and is the editor of the War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition at the Kentucky Historical Society.

He is interested in the history of loyalty, citizenship, and identity in the contested border spaces of mid-nineteenth century. His current book project is Breaking and Remaking the Mason-Dixon Line: Loyalty in Civil War American, 1850-1900. He is also working on multiple projects connected to Kentucky Governor Thomas E. Bramlette and two of the men he enslaved, Leander Pickens and Adam Duvall.
