About the event

Publication Launch | Town Hall No.4
There's more going on in Queensland than you might think, but it can be hard to find without a map. Join us at the Institute of Modern Art for the launch of Town Hall no.4.

To launch the next issue, we're exploring contemporary delivery and rideshare labour through Ayoung Kim's compelling video work, Delivery Dancer's Sphere. Dr Giang Nguyen-Thu, media ethnographer and senior lecturer at the University of Queensland, joins IMA's Assistant Director Odette Miller for an engaging discussion that bridges art and real-world experience.

Following a screening of Ayoung Kim's video work, Miller and Dr Nguyen-Thu will examine the lived realities behind Kim's speculative vision within the context of our neighbours in Asia. The conversation draws on Dr Nguyen-Thu's fascinating research with delivery drivers in Vietnam, contextualising Kim's exploration of body and time optimisation within the actual experiences of contemporary gig workers. This unique dialogue connects artistic speculation with social research, revealing the human stories within our accelerated economy.

Following the screening and discussion, join us at 4pm for a live performance of Max Athans: Breath Song.

About Town Hall

Town Hall is a new free newspaper, published biannually by the Institute of Modern Art. It gathers and profiles the brightest and best of Queensland art–art produced here, art coming here, art leaving here; art established and emerging.

Town Hall no.4 features profiles on local darlings Mandy Quadrio, Tyza Hart and Erika Scott, a roundtable on the question What Does Queer Do?, reflections on the life and death of Jeremy Hynes, an interview with QAG|GOMA favourite Qlafur Eliasson, and much more.

Town Hall is free. Available only in print. It's distributed through galleries and museums, bookshops and cinemas, restaurants and cafes, libraries and art schools, hotels and fashion outlets across Queensland. Want to be a stockist? Let us know.
