- **Event Description**: Fort Works Art, in conjunction with Gallery of Dreams, is proud to announce Inheritance, a solo exhibition by gourd artist Michele Tejuola. This opening marks Tejuola’s second solo show with Fort Works Art and features a collection of intricately carved and hand-painted gourds that explore themes of ancestry, identity, and the African American experience. With an opening reception from 6-9 PM on June 12, 2025, this show will run alongside Declarations of Freedom, a group exhibition with the National Juneteenth Museum. This will be the first iteration of what’s to come with NJM, as we are honored to host their first show. Declarations of Freedom exhibit pieces made by Black artists across the U.S., featuring a sneak peek of a few items to be included in NJM’s private collection. This event commemorates their much-anticipated opening in 2026.

Inheritance is a retrospective encounter showcasing works spanning over four decades. Each piece recounts personal and collective narratives, elevating the traditional craft of gourd art into a fine art form. Through intricate figuration and design, Tejuola addresses themes of race, motherhood, and femininity, creating a visual vocabulary that transforms her medium into a powerful storytelling tool.

This exhibition is more than a celebration of artistry, but a timely tribute to resilience and remembrance. As the city prepares to honor Juneteenth, Tejuola’s work, coming from Fort Worth, adds a vital voice to the conversation, embodying the spirit of liberation and the enduring strength of Black communities nationwide. Presenting this show during such a historic moment amplifies its impact, transforming the gallery space into a site of cultural reflection, healing, and pride.

About the Artist: Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Tejuola is the child of two Southern émigrés. She graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in 1974 and from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio in 1978. Her early career in retail advertising took her to Atlanta, Georgia, where she developed an interest in West African culture and its connections to her own heritage. In the 1990s, Tejuola relocated to North Carolina, where she established herself as a gourd artist. Even after transitioning to a career in teaching middle school art, she continued her craft. Tejuola has shown at numerous exhibitions in the United States, such as the Agora Gallery, the Cameron Art Museum, and the Mint Museum. She has shown with other well-known artists, including Kehinde Wiley, Lydia Thompson, Beauford Delaney, Omar Victor Diop, Jacob Lawrence, and many others.
