About George Kalamaras:
George Kalamaras, former Poet Laureate of Indiana (2014–2016), is Professor Emeritus of English at Purdue University Fort Wayne, where he taught for thirty-two years. He is the author of twenty-seven collections of poetry—eighteen full-length books and nine chapbooks. He has been honored with many awards for his poetry, including a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, two Individual Artist Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission, and other awards, including—most recently—the 2024 Indiana Book Award in Poetry for his book To Sleep in the Horse’s Belly: My Greek Poets and the Aegean Inside Me (Dos Madres Press, 2023). In addition to his publications in the United States, his poems have appeared in print journals in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America and have been translated into Bengali and Spanish.

One of George’s greatest loves is hound dogs! In fact, a recent book of poems focuses entirely on hound dogs. George and his wife, Mary Ann Cain (also a fellow writer and Professor Emeritus at PFW), have nurtured beagles in their home for more than thirty years, first Barney, then Bootsie, and now Blaisie.

George, Mary Ann, and Blaisie now reside in Livermore, Colorado, in the mountains northwest of Fort Collins.
