Small Business Saturday
The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to serve once again as a Neighborhood Champion for Shop Small / Small Business Saturday, an initiative created by American Express to support locally owned businesses and strengthen community economies. As a Neighborhood Champion, the Chamber is rallying shoppers to Shop Small all season long.
This year, the Chamber received a limited supply of Shop Small merchandise from American Express, which is being distributed to locally owned Chamber member businesses to help highlight Small Business Season.
Shoppers are also invited to participate in the Shop Small Passport program this Friday and Saturday. Passports will be available at participating retailers. After earning three or more stamps by making purchases of $5 or more, shoppers can turn in their completed passport at the third store for a chance to win $50 in Chamber Bucks. The drawing will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd. Chamber Bucks function like cash at more than 60 local Chamber member businesses and restaurants.
The Chamber continues to emphasize how impactful local spending truly is. Even small purchases make a measurable difference. Consider these updated 2025 insights:
Local Shopping by the Numbers (2025):
• For every $1 spent at a small business, an estimated 68 cents stays in the community through payroll, local services, and reinvestment.
• Small businesses created nearly two-thirds of all new jobs nationwide in the past decade, strengthening local employment and economic stability.
• If every U.S. household shifted just $10 a month to a local business, more than $11 billion could return to the national economy annually.
• Online purchases remove nearly 100% of spending from the local cycle, while local dollars recirculate—supporting restaurants, salons, coffee shops, retailers, and service providers right here at home.
As you Shop Small this weekend, remember to pick up your Passport, discover new local favorites, and enjoy the chance to win—while supporting the businesses that give back all year long through sponsorships, donations, and community involvement.
This season, let’s give back to those who give so much to Fort Scott.
