Sounds of Freedom: A Musical Journey of Liberation

What does freedom sound like? During the Civil Rights Movement, music became both balm and battleground—a force that steadied marchers’ footsteps and stirred a nation awake. Yet those freedom songs were born long before the Movement, with roots stretching back centuries— rising from spirituals, praise traditions and chants of resilience.

This February, join us for Sounds of Freedom: A Musical Journey of Liberation tracing the evolution of protest and praise music through the lens of African American creativity and courage. This performance invites audiences of all ages to feel the lineage of that struggle echo into the present, held in a powerful dialogue with the AARLCC exhibition—featuring the iconic images of Spider Martin that captured the spirit, stakes, and unwavering determination of the Selma marches.

This program is sponsored by the WLW Catalyst Grant, which underwrites Hued Songs’ residency at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. The performances are presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Selma is Now: The Photography of Spider Martin,” in partnership with Broward Cultural Division and on display at AARLCC through June 27, 2026.
