From two of Colorado’s leading native plant experts, this accessible and colorful guide to planting natives will help gardeners at every level of experience add beneficial pollinators to their home gardens.

Bring Your Garden to Life-and Life to Your Garden!
The Rocky Mountain Native Plant Primer introduces 225 wildflowers, grasses, cacti, shrubs, and trees across a broad range, including: northern New Mexico, northern Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, much of Idaho and Montana, the Texas Panhandle, and the western halves of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas. As the Rocky Mountains and High Plains grow in population, temperatures rise, and water becomes scarce, this book focuses on the role that native plants and water-wise planting can have in fostering sustainability for all life in the region.

About the Authors:

Lauren Springer
Longtime Fort Collins Nursery workshop presenter Lauren Springer is the recipient of the 2025 American Horticultural Society Landscape Design award. Lauren has designed gardens at the Denver Botanic Gardens, Chatfield Farm, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, and the Gardens on Spring Creek where she is on staff.

Bryan Fischer
A gardener since he could hold a shovel and lifelong resident of Northern Colorado, a trip to Fort Collins Nursery has always meant a good day for Bryan. Today, he is the Horticulture Manager for the High Plains Environmental Center (HPEC). Recruited to pioneer this role by growing HPEC’s gardens and horticulture department, Bryan draws upon his background in public horticulture, garden design, and plant collections management to oversee the care and growth of gardens at the Center itself as well as at several associated landscapes across Northern Colorado. Bryan is also a plant breeder and author working at intersection of aesthetics and ecology; he selects and breeds native species that maximize “garden-worthy” traits while aiming to retain wildlife benefits and writes for regional and national horticulture publications in addition to his coauthorsip of The Rocky Mountain Native Plant Primer with Lauren Springer. Bryan holds a B.S. in Horticulture and an Interdisciplinary Minor in Organic Agriculture from Colorado State University.
