Gurung (Tamu) Lhosar 2025 – The Gurung's New Year Celebration
Tamu Lhosar is the New Year festival of the Gurung (Tamu) community, celebrated every 15th of Poush (December/January) according to the Nepali calendar. It is also observed as a public holiday in Nepal.
Similar to the Lhosar festivals of other Himalayan ethnic groups such as the Tamangs and Sherpas, the Gurungs divide the years into 12 cycles, known as Lohokor, each represented by a different animal: eagle, serpent, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, deer, mouse, cow, tiger, and cat.
In the Tamu (Gurung) language, the word Lhosar comes from “Lho,” meaning new year or time, and “Sar,” meaning change — together symbolizing the change of the year. Each new Lho marks the beginning of a fresh cycle, and the festival signifies bidding farewell to the old year while welcoming the new one with joy and gratitude.
Tamu Lhosar is one of the most vibrant Gurung festivals, celebrated with family gatherings, traditional feasts, dances, and cultural programs. People wear traditional attire, visit relatives, and express good wishes for peace and prosperity in the coming year.
In 2025, Tamu Lhosar falls on Tuesday, December 30th.
In 2026, it will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 30th.
This year, the Triratna Foundation will celebrate Gurung Lhosar on Sunday, December 28th, 2025, with Lhosar Prayers beginning on December 25th and concluding on December 30th.
In this special event, Triratna Foundation has invited distinguished guests from Nepal, India, Bhutan, and several other countries, including representatives from different states across the United States of America. The celebration aims to promote cultural unity, community harmony, and international friendship through the rich traditions of the Gurung people.
The event will also feature a variety of engaging and entertaining activities, including:
