Celebrate International Jazz Day with a free concert at the Healthy West Orange Arts and Heritage Center. Spend the afternoon enjoying jazz trio The Eighth Note Collective on the Center porch from 3 - 6 p.m. on Friday, April 29, presented by the Town of Oakland and HAPCO Music Foundation.
Band member and Florida native Derrick Harris, a trombone player since age 11, is a member of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Jazz Orchestra. Bass player Jose Figueroa, born and raised in Puerto Rico, carries the low end for many local music groups and Robert Bradley, from Chicago, started playing percussion in church at age seven and is now a multi-instrumentalist.
Learn about the history of jazz with some fun facts and interactive activities for adults and kids.
The Center, located at 126 W. Petris Ave., will be open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on April 29. Visitors will also experience the “Est. 1887” exhibition, which features historic photographs, documents, and artifacts, tracing the origins of the Town of Oakland and the major players behind its founding. These historic pieces are complemented by beautiful landscape paintings by local artists, which are available for purchase.
