Deadline to apply: Wednesday, October 1 @ 12 midnight Acceptance to Exhibition shall be emailed by 6pm October 2 Description: An Ofrenda or Altar is created as an invitation to celebrate and honor the dead. For more than 3,500 years the people of Mexico have held on to a cultural practice known today as Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. When the Spanish Explorers landed almost 500 years ago in what is now Mexico, they encountered Aztec peoples practicing a ritual focused upon death. The Spaniards would eventually embrace it and merge it with their religious traditions of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Today Dia de los Muertos is expressed in many ways and can be found throughout the world as a cultural, political and artistic expression. This holiday focuses on food, culture & memories of the dead, often utilizing humor. It is a universal concept and cultures across Latin America and the world also had similar practices. Location: New River Inn Historic Museum 219 SW 2 NE Ave. Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301 (EXIT OFF BROWARD BOULEVARD) Local parking is about $1.50/hour as available Dates: - Drop Off - Friday Oct 3 (4-8pm) - Opening - Sunday Oct 5 (opening ceremony 11am-3pm) - Exhibit Open 10am- 5pm most days in October - Closing Sunday Nov 2 (10am-7pm) - Pick up - Monday November 3 (4-8pm) Anything not picked up may be discarded Accepted Ofrenda Details: - 3-D or 2-D pieces that remain consistent with and respectful of the "Day of the Dead" Tradition - Should be unique and personal reflective of the memorial - Requested Size 2 Deep x 2' Wide X 3' High (Maximum 4' wide or 5' High) - No food or live/cut flowers - No real candles or live flame - Self-standing installations only - Artists are responsible for their own supplies (i.e. Tables, table cloth, boxes, lights, etc.) - Exhibiting artist must provide all materials, supplies and labor necessary for installation & pick up - As this is a traditional family friendly cultural event we ask that content is G-rated with discretion concerning any political subjects. - This exhibit is monitored by staff, however all items in your ofrenda are placed at your own risk so please do not incorporate one of a kind, valuable, or highly sentimental objects but rather add inexpensive symbols of these objects.
