- **Event Description**: Free 12-hour Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid course in Rafford, delivered over four Sunday afternoons this November.About this EventBuild the confidence and practical skills to recognise when someone may be experiencing mental health distress, start a supportive conversation and offer appropriate initial help. This November, Green Ribbons is offering a free Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) course at Rafford Village Hall, funded through income generated by Brilliantly Brave’s licensing partnership with Carousel Calendars. The full 12-hour course will run over four Sunday afternoons, making it easier to take part without committing to two full training days. What is Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid?Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid is an established 12-hour programme designed to help people recognise when someone may be experiencing mental health distress and respond with greater confidence.Like physical first aid, it is about providing appropriate initial support until further or professional help is available. It is not about diagnosing someone, becoming a counsellor or taking responsibility for solving another person’s difficulties.Instead, the course provides a practical framework for knowing what to notice, how to approach someone, how to listen without judgement and how to help them towards appropriate support. The programme is delivered by a qualified SMHFA instructor and its quality is continuously monitored by Public Health Scotland. What will we cover?Across the four sessions, we’ll explore:the role and boundaries of a Mental Health First Aiderattitudes, stigma and discriminationrecovery and self-helpalcohol, drugs and mental healthlistening skillsdepressionanxietyself-harmpsychosisrecognising and responding to mental health crisissuicide interventionhow to guide someone towards appropriate further or professional supportYou’ll also learn and practise the five-step SMHFA approach, ALGEE, giving you a clear framework to draw on when someone may need help. What is the course like? This is not 12 hours of sitting through presentations. The course includes a mixture of discussion, activities, films and practical learning, with opportunities to think about how Mental Health First Aid works in real situations.Green Ribbons takes a plain-speaking, supportive approach to difficult subjects. The aim is to help people leave feeling more knowledgeable and more confident, while remaining clear about where the Mental Health First Aider role begins and ends.Participants also receive an SMHFA course manual to keep as a reference and a certificate of attendance on completion of the course.Who is it for?The course is suitable for people from workplaces, community groups, voluntary organisations and the wider community. You do not need previous mental health training. You might want to take part because you:would like to understand mental health betterwant to feel more confident approaching someone you are worried aboutsupport people through work, volunteering or community activitywant practical skills for listening and respondingwould like to understand what to do if someone is experiencing a mental health crisissimply feel these would be useful skills to haveWhy is the course free?Brilliantly Brave is the product-based strand connected to the wider work of Green Ribbons.Income generated through Brilliantly Brave’s licensing partnership with Carousel Calendars is helping fund this course, allowing places to be offered to the local community free of charge. It is a practical example of the model in action: commercial partnerships helping make good mental health support more accessible.About Green RibbonsGreen Ribbons is a Moray-based mental health training and wellbeing business working with workplaces and communities across Scotland. The course will be delivered by Jean Pryde, founder of Green Ribbons and a qualified SMHFA instructor, who brings nearly 30 years of experience working in mental health to the way the programme is facilitated.Places are limitedSMHFA works best with a relatively small group, so places on this free course are limited. Please only book if you expect to be able to attend all four Sunday sessions. If you would like to feel more confident recognising when someone may need help, starting a conversation and knowing how to respond appropriately, we’d be very glad to have you with us.Four Sunday afternoons.
