Kpelejoo is a traditional Ga-Dangme celebration from the coastal communities of Accra, Ghana. More than a performance, it is a joyful expression of community, music and dance, where generations gather to celebrate life, strengthen connections and share stories through rhythm. For WALA – Is Life, KPELEJOO Festival is an opportunity to bring this living tradition from Ghana to their adopted home of Melbourne, creating a space where people of every background can experience the energy, warmth and spirit of West African culture.

For more than 25 years, WALA – Is Life has been sharing the traditions of Ghana across Australia through authentic music, dance and cultural education. Their performances combine powerful drumming, vibrant dancing, rich vocal harmonies and audience participation, creating an experience that is both deeply traditional and irresistibly engaging.

Joining WALA – Is Life is the incredible Chikchika Trio.

Featuring renowned Oromo singer-songwriter and dancer Muluu Baqqalaa, Tigrinya vocalist and kirar player Anbessa Gebrehiwot, and drummer Michael McNab, the trio blends the musical traditions of Ethiopia and Eritrea into a captivating contemporary performance. Their rich harmonies, ancient stringed instruments and hypnotic rhythms have made Chikchika favourites at festivals including WOMADelaide, Sydney Festival, Vivid Festival, Dark Mofo, Mona Foma, Rising Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, Leaps & Bounds, Panama Festival and Alice Springs’ Big Day Out in Harmony.

Keeping the celebration alive before the show, between sets and well into the evening is DJ Wadrago.

More than just a DJ, DJ Wadrago is a true vibe curator, renowned for seamlessly blending the infectious rhythms of Afrobeats with the energy of Hip-Hop. With an instinct for reading the crowd, he creates dance floors that stay full from the first track to the last. Whether building anticipation before the live performances or keeping the party going afterwards, DJ Wadrago delivers an unforgettable soundtrack that perfectly complements the spirit of KPELEJOO Festival.
