The history of Australian folk music in the twentieth century cannot be written without the Lumsden Family of Footscray. From the 1950s onward, Arthur, Kath, and their son David Lumsden acted as catalysts of what would become a national revival in folk. They were involved in setting up the earliest folk organisations, collected and shared traditional songs and put on events for progressive causes. 

Folk music for generations has served as an accessible form of self-education. To learn a song was to enter history from below; to share it was to enact a form of community.

Melbourne had a thriving folk scene going back to the 1950s. There were teams of community historians who were traveling around the country, looking for rare songs and examples of what we now call ‘folklife’. The Lumsden Family were part of this tradition, and their contribution has never been put into focus until now.
