The first book of hers I read was The Gift of Imperfection a few years ago, and it truly struck a chord with me. Last year, I joined an online book club, and another one of her masterpieces, Dare to Lead, was our featured read. In this book, Brené Brown makes a compelling case that courage is the foundation of true leadership. To her, leadership is not about titles, status, or authority. It is about the willingness to show up, be vulnerable, and lead with integrity, even when life feels uncertain and messy. Here are a few things that really stood out to me: 1. Vulnerability is not weakness One of the central messages of the book is that vulnerability is the birthplace of courage, creativity, and innovation. Leaders who pretend to have all the answers shut down learning and growth. True leadership requires the courage to say, “I don’t know,” and remain open. 2. Clear is kind Avoiding difficult conversations does not make problems disappear. Brown emphasizes that honest, respectful conversations build trust. Being clear and direct with people is an act of kindness, not cruelty. 3. Courage over comfort Great leadership often requires choosing courage over comfort. It means stepping into uncertainty, making difficult decisions, and standing by your values even when it feels uncomfortable.
